Nepean Hotspurs SC Lightning Score Silver at Ontario Indoor Cup Final
RELEASE - The Nepean Hotspurs Soccer Club (NHSC) is pleased to announce that the Nepean Hotspurs Lightning (U16G OYSL) reached the final of the 2010 Ontario Indoor Cup U16G Tournament, which was held at The Soccer Centre in Vaughn , Ontario , on Sunday, February 28th. This marks the fourth consecutive year that the Lightning have reached the final, or semi final, of the Indoor Cup.
Game 1 of the round robin phase saw the Lightning in action against the Vaughn Azzurri 94s. Despite controlling the majority of play, the Lightning were unable to get past a very strong goalie in the Vaughan net, and game ended in a scoreless draw. In Game 2, the Lightning took an early lead against the Scarborough West Rouge Storm, and never looked back, adding two more goals to record a 3-0 victory. The win pitted the Lightning against the Mississauga Falcons in Game 3. The Lightning needed a victory to finish first in the pool and to ensure a spot in the semi-finals. Again, the Lightning controlled most of the play, with Breanna Hall scoring the winning goal in a 1-0 victory, advancing the Lightning to the semi finals. Sunday’s medal round saw the Lightning in action against the Unionville Strikers in a semi-final match up. Dominating all aspects of the game, the Lightning advanced to the final on a 5-0 victory over the Strikers, with goals from Breanna Humphreys (2), Julia Lennon, Florinda Furano and Vanessa MacMillan. The Cup Final saw the Lightning locked in a defensive battle with the Erin Mills Eagles A. Lightning keeper Liz MacDougall was at the top of her game, including a stop on a penalty shot. Rock solid defence by Megan Normoyle and Nicole Middleton kept the Eagles at bay for extended periods, while Erin Wilson and Rachel Edwards worked tirelessly to control possession throughout the match. The first half ended with Erin Mills holding a 1-0 lead, after scoring off of a corner kick. The Lightning came out hard in the second half, hitting the goal posts twice, before scoring midway through the half to tie the game. Despite a great effort from the Lightning, the Eagles regained the lead shortly after, and the game ended in a 2-1 victory for Erin Mills, and a second consecutive silver medal for the Lightning in Indoor Cup competition. The entire Hotspurs family congratulates Coach Adam, team staff, players and parents for an outstanding effort, and for representing our club so well. It’s a great start to our 40th anniversary season.
